Thanks for that Mark, I shall start teaching the Ecosystems Unit on 8th June when Year 12 return from study leave (!!) so all resources and ideas are gratefully received. I shall have 5 hours of 'gained time' to plan this Unit and will add to the Forum as and when I can.
As posted elsewhere on this site, I have been making enquiries to do a day's fieldwork in next academic yr at Prestford Montford FSC on the succession/ biome section- they have designed a quarry investigation to fit new A2 spec with different stages of succession seen around a range of quarry sites, using Chi-Squared as part of follow-up. The only problem is that I only have 4 girls and their minimum group size is 10 (for data collection and costings). Would anyone else in the midlands or further afield be interested in joining us? (We are in Derby- independent girls) No date set as yet.
We are going to PM in the last week of the academic term: 13-17 July (Snr Mgt vetoed an Autumn term yr13 trip despite our Jan p4 entry) drop me a private message if interested and we could discuss further.
I've taught the Edexcel ecosystems for a number of years - We don't have an IWB so I don't have any ppts for sharing but I will get some of my files and things up shortly. For hydrological succession I've used the Offwell succession it is fantastic with detailed zonation diagrams and transects (with detailed survey data) and specific details on individual species and adaptation. It is a bit of a maze to follow through all the links, but worth it. Virtual fieldwork if that is not an oxymoron. Start here:
Just received this email today. will be good for the PLAGIOCLIMAX - heather moorland -free dvd and resources
The Moorland Association is offering you a copy of the fabulous award winning DVD "The Keeper" free of charge. It gives an insight into Britains iconic heather moorland landscape and is available to order, while stocks last.
"The Keeper" focuses on moorland management as described by a gamekeeper to a schoolboy during a journey to reunite him with his school minibus. The keeper shows him about the moorland landscape, the wildlife it supports, the birds that need his protection, the importance of sustainable management and the need to save this unique habitat for generations to come.
Each DVD comes with a full colour booklet giving supplementary information about the habitat, management, Red Grouse and other upland birds. This DVD is an ideal educational resource and is fully endorsed by the Countryside Foundation for Education.
ooh that DVD looks great Paul many thanks - order placed!
I have just adapted a ppt from the Macauly Institute to use with my year 12 tomorrow on human inpacts on heather moorlands.
There is also our personal study on a local hydrosere case study - only useful really if you are in Cheshire but as I'm in a sharing mood....... :) anyway you can easily adapt the idea for your own local hydrosere.
